Celery (Arrigo Dorissa, 2024)

Twin brothers Chad and Ollie Barry, host Melbourne television’s highest-rated variety show. After the show is cancelled, Ollie becomes depressed, while Barry continues to lust after celebrity status. The Barry brothers never imagine that a stolen bunch of celery will forever change their lives. Celery, set in the picturesque tree-lined streets of Trentham, Victoria, is a cautionary story about indolence and vanity, where even a luscious green vegetable could be a demon in disguise.

Lady Nitya resides in what she refers to as a multistorey necropolis. It’s actually an institution for the aged and criminally insane. As her 100th birthday approaches, she is determined to be remembered as Melbourne’s longest-living Tivoli dancer. There’s just one problem–her rival, with whom she shared the stage, is still alive at 99-years of age. Lady Nitya has already attempted to assassinate the dancer that she envied, chopping off her own limb in the process. Can Bubbikins, her enchanted porcelain doll, help? Or will the Angel of Death, who dwells on the ground floor, play a role in helping the former headliner achieve her dream?

Researcher and psychologist Marie-Therese Mayflower, flies from Perth to Melbourne to interview Evangeline, the final resident of St Dymphna’s Ward for Women. It’s 1963, and mental health disorders, particularly among women, are frequently misunderstood and misrepresented. Did Evangeline, a young woman with coral-coloured hair, heal her previous residents with the power of touch? Curious medical data prompt Marie-Therese to ask whether what Evangeline sees and accomplishes transcends the mortal world. When Marie-Therese returns to the warm sands of Coral Bay Beach in Western Australia, she sees things more clearly. But will it make her regret having shaken Evangeline’s hand as the interview finished?
